Senior Technical Programme Manager, Tesco
Gareth McBain
Gareth McBain joined Tesco in mid-2022 as Senior Technical Programme Manager leading an eight-strong team, and matrix managing up to 50 colleagues globally.
After seven years’ service in the Royal Marines involving multiple deployments, including tours of Iraq and Afghanistan, he found himself in late 2007 in front of a medical board pondering the next professional chapter of his life.
His subsequent transition, he says, was probably as regular as those of many others leaving the Armed Forces. Like them, just identifying a new career pathway was a huge task in itself – let alone working out how to navigate it.
However, as a former Royal Marine he was equipped with a range of key personal and professional transferable skills which he used to build a career combining his high-tech knowledge and expertise with his project and people management skills.
Immediately prior to his arrival at Tesco he spent eight years with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, latterly becoming Head of Engagement and Infrastructure Delivery.
With previous experience setting up a corporate Armed Forces Network he was quick to become involved in Tesco’s network where he is now Veteran Pillar, Chair.
Already one of the UK’s largest employers of military Veterans, he believes that former Armed Forces personnel and their immense transferable skills are a natural go-to resource for Tesco’s future staff needs.
“Tesco is the UK’s largest private sector employer and proud to be one of the country’s biggest employers of Armed Forces Veterans who bring wide-ranging personal and professional skills to the company. As someone who each day witnesses the value of Veterans in the workplace, I am delighted to be a member of the Advisory Board of TheVeteran.UK with its powerful promotional message on behalf of ex-service personnel to employers throughout the UK.”
